Its so hard to believe, but next month will mark 11 years of using high intensity; slow strength training as my sole form of exercise.
As I approach my 61st birthday, I thought I'd relate some random thoughts:
- It's been a very long time since I've worked out more than 12 hours in an entire year.
- I'm truly stunned by the intensity that someone my age can generate. It's very youth preserving.
- I haven't done a shred of cardio since April of 2000. The only exceptions are walking on the golf course and an occasional bike ride neither of which I would call exercise
- Some people think I'm a closet cardio person. Sneaking out at midnight or something. Not true.
- I'm leaner today than I was 11 years ago. Yes my diet is what I would call excellent.
- My blood numbers which I get analyzed every year continue to be excellent.
- I actually continue to improve. Every workout, with at least some of the exercises, I either increase time, weight, or both.
- I haven't incurred a single injury. My left shoulder bothers me but that appears to be from my imperfect golf swing.
It's been a great run. My enthusiasm today is better than ever. I really believe slow, high-intensity strength training is a fountain of youth. Hmmm, where will I be 11 years from now??
